Housing
Over the years I have modified my reptile housing dozens of times as my tastes and requirements have changed.
I use two basic housing methods
: tubs and commercial glass terrariums.
I have recently changed over to the commercial products for the following reasons
Repeatability - One problem that always arose over the years of making my own enclosures was that despite your best plans, no two enclosures ever worked out the same. This means that standard shelving could not be used.
Flow - This refers to the ease of managing a large collection. If all enclosures are similar then moving from cage to cage feeding and cleaning becomes a simple routine.
Security - The commercial cages that I use were chosen for their excellent security features which is especially important for escape prone species like geckos.
Durability - I am quite happy with the construction of these enclosures and spare parts are available should one be damaged.
Where possible I will link to a site where the products can be purchased.
Gecko Enclosures.
For my Gecko species I use three basic methods
tubs and small tanks for Nephrurus knobtails
Reptile One enclosures for small terrestrial species
Exoterra Glass Terrariums for everything else (and Pygopods) - I use the following sizes * 30 x 30 x 30 cm - pairs of Oedura, Strophurus or Underwoodisaurus
* 30 x 30 x 45 cm - Trios of Oedura, small groups of Strophurus, pairs of small leaftails, all small pygopod pairs
* 45 x45 x45 cm - Pairs or trios of Cave gecko, Ringtail Gecko or larger leaftails.
Most enclosures are unheated as the room is temperature controlled. Under some terrestrial species I use URS heat cord over the winter to maintain an area over 15 C (controlled via a Microclimate Pulsing thermostat)
Skink, Monitor and Dragon Enclosures
All my skinks , monitors and dragons live in either Exoterra Glass Terrariums , FT61 Dalbarb Frog Tanks (with a few modifications) or ground level large tubs measuring 50cm x 50cm x 90 cm. These tubs are 220 litre recycling tubs available at Bunnings.
Heating is either via Reflector globes or URS heat cord (for the tanks)(controlled via a Microclimate Pulsing thermostat).
Snake Enclosures
My snakes live in either 60 x 60 x 45 cm Exoterra Glass Terrariums or URS Budget Vivariums.
Heating is provided by Incandescent bulbs controlled by a Ministat Thermostat.
These enclosures are fitted with URS hide rocks for the snakes security.
